Exercise needs by breed group

How much activity herding, sporting, toy and giant breeds really need.

The short answer

Exercise needs depend on breed, age and health. Herding and sporting breeds usually need 1–2 hours of activity a day, with mental work too. Many toy and flat-faced breeds need shorter, gentler sessions. Puppies do best with short play sessions, not long runs.

Rough guide

  • Herding and sporting (Border Collie, Lab, Aussie): 60–120 minutes, plus training or sniff games
  • Working (Bernese, Husky): 60+ minutes, with care in heat
  • Hounds: long sniff walks, a secure recall area
  • Toy and flat-faced breeds: 20–40 minutes, and avoid heat

Puppies

  • Several short play sessions a day
  • No forced running or long hikes until growth plates close (ask your vet)
